This past week our school had the wonderful opportunity to honor our veteran's on Veteran's Day. Our opportunity started on Monday, November 10, when our 4th and 5th graders walked down to the cemetery and placed brass plaques and flags on the gravesites of 212 veterans that have passed on. Students learned about the history of many of the wars. Each student had the chance to adopt a veteran at the cemetery.
On Veteran's Day, November 11, our entire school participated in a Veteran's Day parade. Classes made banners and carried flags to show our patriotism. We invited the 5th graders from Coral Canyon, Horizon, Panorama, Riverside, and Sandstone. All totaled, over 1500 students were in the parade. Marching bands from many of the area high schools and middle schools added a special musical rhythm to help us march down the parade route.
At the completion of the parade, our fifth grade students participated in a special patriotic program honoring our heroes. The theme of the event was "What's More American." The students sang many of the patriotic songs that are part of America. A major part of the program was the reading of essays by students from each of the schools. Jamie Tucker represented our school and did a wonderful job. Here is an excerpt from her essay, "What's more American than having your dad gone for a year and a half to fight for our country? What's more American than wondering if your dad is still alive or dead? What's more American than finding out your dad is wounded in combat? . . . what could be more American than a family helping keep our country free and safe?"
Looking forward, we want to remind parents that our annual food drive has begun. It will run until Friday, Nov. 21. Our goal is 2008 food items. Let's all give a little so that we can help others.

I think it such a great opportunity for students to feel the spirit of patriotism and honor our veterans. The students will never forget these kinds of experiences.
